From a statement released by the Health Department of Sabah, as of May 13, 2006 the cholera outbreak infection is concentrated in six districts in Sabah. Nonetheless, at the moment the outbreak is only active at 3 main districts i.e. Kota Belud, outskirts of Kota Kinabalu, and Tawau. The number of villages affected that is still active are one (1) in Kota Kinabalu, one (1) in Tawau on the east coast and 19 villages in Kota Belud, located one hour to the north.
So far, Kota Belud has recorded the highest number of cases and preventive measures have been taken, that includes identification of all cholera cases and active carriers and to admit them to isolation ward. At the moment no chronic cases recorded for patients infected that requires warding for long period. Other preventive activities that have been taken are water and food sampling to detect cholera germs. Chlorine has been put into wells of the affected villages to kill cholera germs. Intensive supervision to sanitary in all food premises in Kota Belud town were also taken to make sure that cholera outbreak will not occur. At the moment the cholera outbreak in Kota Belud District is under control and cholera cases and active carriers has drop drastically for the past week.
We wish to inform all visitors that there is no cause to be alarm about the cholera situation as most five star hotels and resorts are located within the close vicinity of the City where no cholera outbreak has been recorded. On the same note, all the popular tourist attractions are also NOT within the area of the outbreak. However, we would like to advise all visitors to take precautionary measure when eating at public food outlets in the outskirts of the city. Please make sure not to drink from the tap and to try drinking bottled water.
