Kipandi Butterfly Park

The Kipandi Butterfly Park located in the Crocker Range is a complex of high altitude hills, up to 1500m, extending southward from this summit. These hills are mostly covered with primary forest in which at least 8000 species of plants including 2500 species of trees have been recorded and this area is one of the most important sanctuary for the biodiversity in the world. The entomological fauna of this area is one fo the richest of the world.

Our park is located in Moyog, Penampang and lies at 700 meter altitude in the heart of the Crocker range. It is a very beautiful place surrounded with forest. Walking around in the path will bring you backt to a lost paradise with the song of cicadas and birds and fluttering butterflies sipping nectar of gorgeous flowers. Many butterflies come into the garden to suck nectrar from the many flower shrubs. Over 100 species have been recorded and inside the enclosure can be more easily photographed.

 Butterfly Garden

For a closer look, some of these very nice butterflies often being high flyers. You can enjoy our butterfly garden in which we breed most of the rarest species, like the Rajah brooks' and golden birdwings. This activity is a part of a joint project with the Sabah Wildlife department aiming to release them in the forest for repopulation of threatened species since that project exists not less than several hundreds of birdwings butterflies have been released in the wild.

 The Insects Museum

Our museum collection, the first private in Sabah will also surprise you by the great diversity of shapes and beautiful colours of various. The insectarium have over 500 butterflies and over 3000 beetles. Particularly long horned, chafers and stag beetles. Especially many endemic species which were only found in the Crocker Range like the cyclommatus chewi. It also contains some very rare endemic species recently discovered by worldwide scientists.

The Native Plants Collection

Special enclosures have been constructed to house, some of the rare and endangered orchids and pitcher plants of Sabah. This is a joint conservation project with the Sabah Wildlife Department. In our park we also have a very important botanical collection allowing specialists to study and more than 500 species of native orchids growing in our park, some of them are very difficult to observe in the wild. We also have one of the nicest collection of 28 species “carnivorous” pitcher plants (Nepenthes), 40 species of Hoyas (wax flowers) and 5 species of lipstick flowers (Aeschynanthus) and other native plants.

The Kipandi Butterfly Park is open daily from 9am to 4pm, the best time to spot butterflies are between 9am to 11am.
