Merdeka Day Regatta

The 15th Merdeka Day Regatta 2008 to commemorate the 51st year of Independence of some States of Malaysia is expected to attract another record number of participants this year.
The event will commence on the 29August over a three day period and end on Merdeka Day, 31August2008.
The event last year attracted a record 141 participants in 111 sailing boats. The event was co organized by Kinabalu Yacht Club, Sutera Harbour Marina Golf and country club and Sabah Sailing Association.
From what used to be a low key club event only for local sailors, it has now matured into a high profile event with the inclusion ocean going keelboats. They will be joined by more than a hundred dinghies with participants from Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and Philippines and possibly some from Europe and Australasia.
The keelboat racing class will enter a new phase with the special invitation by Sabah Sailing Association for two high performance IRC rated racing class yachts from the Royal Malaysian Navy. The DK-FARR 520 design yachts Zuhal and Zuhrah. The yacht Zuhrah is pictured below and requires a crew of 10 to sail.
The DK-FARR 520 has a basic catalog price of RM2.2 million each.
For the dinghies, the Malaysian Yachting Association has sanctioned the Merdeka Regatta as a "Ranking" race and this itself will attract all the top sailors from every Malaysian State to come. Neighbouring countries like Singapore and Indonesia will send also their top sailors for exposure.
