Date Posted: 23 Dec 2008

Kota Kinabalu: A carnival and concert will be among the activities organised by City Hall to usher in the New Year.

City Hall's very first such programme will be held from Dec 29 to 31, beginning with the New Year Eve Carnival 2008 at Gaya Street and followed by the Kota Kinabalu City Countdown Concert 2009, the highlight of the celebrations, beginning at 5pm until midnight at Padang Merdeka.

Some of the artistes expected to perform at the concert are Nora, Lotter and Divine Masters, Abu Bakar Ellah, Ayu Mentor, Dior, Atama, Clare Petrus Edwin, Valerie Wong and also performances from the top three winners of the just-concluded City's Modern Dance Competition and Battle of The Bands.

At the stroke of midnight the public would be treated to a fireworks display. Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said they decided to organise the event due to requests from the public and because of the success of other carnivals such as the recently concluded Gaya Christmas Carnival, as well as the Chinese New Year and Tadau Kaamatan carnivals by City Hall.

The carnival at Gaya Street will be opened from 6 pm - 10.30 pm, featuring stalls selling local goods, handicrafts, food and drinks. Among other programmes lined up are a car roadshow, funfair stalls and funland for children from 10am to 10pm at Padang Merdeka while a paintball competition would also be held at the same venue from 8am to 6pm.

Attractive cash prizes of RM1,000, RM600 and RM400 are up for grabs for the first, second and third places respectively.
