KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will host the national-level International Museum Day celebration next year from 18 to 23 May.
A total of 500 museum officials from all over the country will be involved as well as several personalities from the International Council of Museums.
Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture Datuk Masidi Manjun was speaking when delivering his winding up speech yesterday.
He revealed that as the Sabah State Museum continued to gain popularity through various programmes, 365,995 people came to visit until Oct 2009 with revenue collected amounting to Rm426,976.15 as of September.
Activities conducted by the Sabah Cultural Board to promote and preserve the cultures of 35 ethnic groups in the state generated RM839,085.10.
Popular among tourists visiting Sabah are the Sabah Parks and wildlife sanctuaries and as of October this year, a total of 602,257 people came to visit. They consisted of 396,825 locals and 205,432 foreigners.
Sabah Parks collected RM10,556,906.07 from these visitors as of September 2009 or 75.3 per cent of the RM14,018,000 that had been set as the target this year. Next year the ministry aims to collect RM16.6 million.
Other tourism spots within the Wildlife Department areas received 198,209 visitors and by July this year, the amount collected was RM21,792,682.05.
