NST reporter wins state tourism prize

KOTA KINABALU: New Straits Times journalist Jaswinder Kaur bagged top honours at the 2009 Sabah Tourism Awards for an article on the Kinabatangan floodplains.

The article was adjudged the Best Tourism Article on Sabah published in Malaysia in the biennial awards, which acknowledge those who played significant roles in the state's tourism industry.

Jaswinder wrote about the importance of Sungai Kinabatangan to the tourism industry. Her award came under the Print and Electronic Media category.

Japanese writer Yusuke Abe of ANA Inflight magazine (article published overseas category), Francoise Fombertaux of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (best international television programme) and Beverly Rodrigues of Travel 3Sixty (magazine) were the other winners.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun presented all the awards.

Two individuals were presented the Minister's Special Award in recognition of their contributions to tourism in Sabah -- Australian Lynette Ramsay for her research on the World War 2 Death March and Dr Michael Patrick Wong for his books and films on Sabah.

Three received the Sabah Tourism Special Appreciation award -- Pandian Sulaiman and Nonjiring Mantuku for their contribution to the handicraft industry and Nasriadi Abdullah for his pioneering role as traditional performances choreographer.

Other winners were: Sandakan (Cleanest Municipality); Kuala Penyu (Cleanest District); Wisma Merdeka (Best Shopping Complex); Ka'andaman Traditional Healing Garden and The Spa at Dalit Bay, Shangri-La Rasa Ria (Best Spa Experience); Ben Duncan Angkee and Hajalima Lamasa (Best Tour Guides); Cock and Bull Bistro, KK Waterfront and Shenanigan's Fun Pub, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu (Best Night Spot Experience); Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort, Grace Hotel, Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley and Miso Walai Homestay (Excellence in Hotel Services); and, Tepi Laut Makan Street, Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort and Kak Nong Restaurant (Best Food Outlet).
