The Sabah Tourism Awards was held at the Grand Ballroom of Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort on Sunday, 25 November, where the highlight of the night was the presentation of the Minister’s Special Recognition Awards. The honour went to Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive of AirAsia and Datuk Douglas Primus, Managing Director of Sukau Proboscis Lodge Sdn. Bhd. for their outstanding contribution to the growth and success of Sabah’s tourism industry. The Guest of Honor for the night was Datuk Masidi Manjun, Minister of Tourism Culture and Environment Sabah.
Among the top honours of the night went to Nexus Resort Karambunai who was acknowledged for their ‘Excellence in Hotel Services (3, 4 and 5 Stars)’. The Best Tour Package went to Borneo Eco Tours Sdn. Bhd – 3D & 2N Kinbatangan Wildlife. The Sabah Museum was named Best Tourism Attraction in the Non-Nature Category while the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary won the in the Nature Category. Sai Yin Nyean walked away with the Best General Tour Guide Award while Ahmadul Tahir was named Best Specialised Tour Guide.
Kak Nong Restaurant was named Best Kopitiam in the Best Food Outlet category while Best Restaurant went to Ferdinand’s, Magellan Sutera, Sutera Harbour Resort. The Cleanest District went to Kudat once again, having won the same title in the last Sabah Tourism Awards back in 2005.
The Sabah Tourism Awards was introduced in 1997 to celebrate the industry’s achievements and commitment to excellence and is held biennially. Nominees include contributors to the State and national tourism development in various fields, namely frontliners, agencies, hotels, resorts, a variety of businesses as well as the media. Each category has a selected panel of judges headed by the Chairman. The judging is carried out over a span of 3 to 6 months, and points are awarded based on their respective criteria.
