SANDAKAN: Some 13,401 local and foreign tourists visited three museums in Sandakan and Kinabatangan last year.
The three museums are Muzium Warisan Sandakan and Rumah Agnes Keith in Sandakan and Muzium Agop Batu Tulug in Kinabatangan.
Museum assistant Shafinah Yusop said of the total, 8,816 were local tourists while 4,585 were foreigners.
"The 13,401 tourists recorded was a decline of 536 from the 13,937 recorded in 2010. Australian tourists and local tourists from the bulk of visitors to the three museums annually," she said
Shafinah said annually, the three museums were visited by 4,500 - 5,000 foreign tourists and 8,500 - 9,500 local tourists.
Rumah Agnes Keith, opened in April 2004 in honour of United States author Agnes Keith, had the most number of tourists, followed by Muzium Warisan and Muzium Batu Tulug.
Agnes was the wife of Harry Keith, former director of agriculture and forest conservation for North Borneo who stayed at the house in 1946.
Programmes and activities lined up for tourists include an exotic exhibition and Agnes Keith Day, held on July 6 each year.
Muzium Warisan, which houses the history of Sandakan before and after World War II, was opened in January 2003.
The museum has a gallery called "Safari in Sandakan" showing the photography work of Martin and Osa Johnson, two travelers from United States.
Muzium Agop Batu Tulug in Kinabatangan is home to a limestone hill that rises 40 metres, formed from Labang limestone, some 20 - 25 million years ago.
It was also an ancient burial site with more than 125 wooden coffins about 500 - 900 years old.
