
Pulau Sipadan waters to be gazetted

Sandakan: There is a need to gazette the waters off Sipadan Island as a protection park to safeguard the marine life there, Sabah Parks Director, Paul Basintal said.
At the moment only the island, stretching 13.5km, has been gazetted and the waters would be gazetted in the second phase. He noted that 12 popular diving spots in the area did not come under the conservation zone.
Speaking to reporters after opening a Sabah Parks seminar here yesterday. Paul said the process to make it a gazetted area was in progress, with the cooperation of relevant authorities, like Semporna District Office, which had put up a public notice pertaining to the proposed gazette.

MUSIC buffs thronged Tanjung Simpang Mengayau on Saturday (July 16) for the first of a two-day Tip of Borneo Sunset Music Fest 2011.
As last year, the Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) conducted by Yap Ling took centre-stage, prompting Minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun, to heap praise.
Old faces included veteran guitarist Roger Wang and friends like singer composer Angelina Perete and Astee touching hearts.
What's new on Day One were Sabah artistes Dayang Noraini and Kudat-hailed Freddy A. Okuling who vindicated their tag as the "best" local talents.

KUDAT: Ticket buying music buffs swarmed Tanjung Simpang Mengayau for the first day of 2011 Tip of Borneo Sunset Music Fest, Saturday (July 16).
In terms of the overall emotional impact on a scale of 10, this writer would rate it 8 out of 10.
That is, a very positive feeling about the quality of both the performers and their performance, though others may differ.
The enhanced elements this year include more local content plus top rate Sing Out Asia recording artistes and troupes from Okinawa, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand - their first ever show in Malaysia.

Borneo Eco film fest in Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: Sandakan will play host to the first Borneo Eco Film Festival (www.beff.co) from July 29 to 31 at the Rainforest Discovery Centre Auditorium and Balin Roofgarden Bistro, NAK Hotel.
The free community-service event, an extension of the Eco Film Fest (EFF) founded by non-profit environmental organisation EcoKnights in 2008, aims to increase public awareness of environmental issues through the power of film and visual media.
On the agenda are film screenings, interactive workshops, talks and musical performances by guest artistes such as Roger Wang, Amir Yussof, Angelina Perete and Hezekiah Asim.
