Ocean Golf, A New Experience at Shangri-la Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu

Inspired by the theme “Tourism Futures Reimagined” from the 6th World Tourism Conference (WTC) held recently in Kota Kinabalu last November, the launch timing was perfect as it was an innovative way to put the vision into realization. This new guest activity will be available in 2023.

Driven to host people while operating sustainably, Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu, is proud to launch Ocean Golf Unique Experience, kicking off the new product “Biodegradable Fish Food Golf Balls.” The dream is to provide people the chance to swing and blast into the widest ocean with the infusion of kindness to marine life. It will be the first of its kind in Malaysia.

Pioneering sustainability within the tourism industry in Sabah, Shangri-La Rasa Ria has introduced the new Eco-Bio-Ball and brought uniqueness into the experience tourism industry. The golf balls are 100 percent safe with non-contaminating materials and certified as biodegradable and non-toxic products. Once it hits the sea, the outer layer dissolves in a few hours to release fish food kept inside. Within 48 hours of hitting the seawater, marine life can start feasting on the food. After 28 days, the balls biodegrade entirely. Perfect for improving golf swing at the beach while enjoying the beautiful sunsets of Rasa Ria.

Present at the beachfront ceremony were the twelve top international golf players from SBS Golf Korean Ladies Professional Golfer Association (KLPGA). The KLPGA Rookie Championship 2023 is currently being held and filmed at Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club. It is called the getaway for the best newcomers on the Korean women’s golf tour that has produced many KLPGA first-division winners. The tenth tournament this year is a popular program in Korea with a high viewer rating. Alongside the international rookie players were Sabahan’s very own golfer Fadley Nouman Datuk Suria.

The launch started with a speech from Fiona Hagan, General Manager of Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu. It then continues with a short remark from Deputy Chief Minister and State Minister of Industrial of Sabah, Yang Berhormat Datuk Joacim Gunsalam who later officiated the launching ceremony by kicking off the 1st “sea-off” to the ocean. “We are thrilled to initiate this new exciting experience as one of our guests’ activities for 2023, with the hope of creating a memorable experience for our guests whilst striving to do good for our environment,” said Fiona.
