Maragang Hill

The Maragang Hill, which is 2,232 metres above sea level and was opened to the public in 2017, has quickly become a popular ‘training ground’ for hikers preparing to face Mount Kinabalu. Mesilou Ecotourism Association manages the Maragang Hill pathways, which were constructed by the Kampung Mesilou community (META). Since then, the area has grown into a fantastic tourism offering that attracts both local and international visitors.

Hikers can choose from a variety of packages. Sunrise hike (3 a.m.) and regular hike (6 a.m.) on the conventional or loop trail. The regular trail takes roughly 3-4 hours to finish on average. Hikers will encounter 35-degree steep hills and uneven ground in several areas. A length of boardwalk was built along some of the routes to the peak to lessen the damage to the natural ground.

Bookings can be made directly through the META website or through any travel agent who sells this tour.

All travellers should be aware that this climb will test their endurance and will necessitate some self-preparation. Hikers should also pack appropriately with the appropriate gear and apparel.

To reach this place, visitors can take a mini bus or taxi from Jalan Padang Bus Station with direction to Kundasang/Ranau. Communicate with driver for drop-off at Kundasang town. A chartered vehicle is required to go to Mesilou Ecotourism Association (META) office at Kg Mesilou.  Alternatively, one can self-drive or use e-hailing services from Kota Kinabalu City or enquire with their selected tour operator. There will be transportation offered from META office (meeting point) to the starting point of the climb.
